SPECIAL EDUCATION: ONE PROJECTOR ONE COMPUTER LESSON




This lesson was designed to be done with a small group of students with multiple special needs at the beginning of the year. This could also be done in an inclusive classroom developing rules for helping a student with special needs.

LESSON PLAN
Class Name: Inclusive Resource for students with Multiple Disabilities aka Resource Rockstars

Instructor: Sarah Rose

Location: Holmes Elementary Resource Classroom

Length of Classes: 45 minutes

Day/ Time: Beginning of the Year (Week 1 or 2)


Equipment:
1 computer, 1 projector

Reminders
- You may need to remind students how you are expecting them to communicate their answers.
- Use positive praise (stickers or high fives) for students who are doing what you want to see; ignore all other behaviors.

10 minutes
Check to see who is ready to learn.
"Raise your hand and eyes on me if you are ready to learn."
Teacher at front of the room.

2 minutes
If you have an emergency....
Remind students to raise both hands or yell, if they have an emergency, like they are in pain or have to go the bathroom.
Demonstrate for the students.
If students are not engaged sit in a students desk and model.
Opening Activity
5 minutes

Voting on whether or not we need class rules: Students use their communication systems to vote yes/ or no on whether or not we need class rules.
*If doing with a inclusion general education classroom; have students use the communication system of the student with a disability.
"Who thinks we need classroom rules? Think about your answer for 1 minute before you vote."
Count votes and click on the link to enter them in and have it graphed. If you do not have word and graphing tools: just draw a graph on the board.

15 min
- Review result from our voting.
- Explanation of why we need rules use picture to demonstrate what would happen without rules.
- Explain that a story has been created to help them learn some of the classroom rules and remember them.
- Review readings skills and practice with puppy story.
"In order to try our hardest we need a safe and fun learning environment."

" We will need to use our reading skills of looking at the pictures, sounding out words, and identifying sight words to help us read this story."
Demonstrating with chart from word or on board, and then going back to wiki for picture example. Remind students to look at the board, remember to describe letters an images to students with Visual Impairments.
New Skills
20 minutes
Read through the Rules Story with the class.
After each rule ask if students think this is a good rule?
If no see if they think you should change it.
"Is this a good rule for our class?"
Remind students to look at the board, remember to describe letters an images to students with Visual Impairments.
Game(s)/ Student Involvement/ Independent Work

5 minutes
Show students brainstormed list you found of other classes rules.
Read them aloud and vote if students want those rules.
"Is there a rule that anyone thinks we need???"

Verbally scan through rules.
Remind students what brainstorming is, and why we do it.
Closing
5 minutes
Allow 10 minutes for students to choose an online book they want to listen to from tarheelreader. books on rules.
" Use your headphones and turn the page on your own, you need to listen to the whole page before going to the next page."
Independent on their computers or print tarheel books so students have paper copies.
